Playing football and cricket on No 1 Oval. Watching Yallourn Footbal Club every Saturday arvo. The Briquette Factory Explosion (approx 1951). Most of my memories were here. Lots of time in the bush, walking to school, great autumn colours, claret ashes, school drinks, sport. Basically it's the house I grew up in and I have many wonderful memories of Yallourn while living there. What a town! How lucky we were!...Ian

Large parkland at the rear of the Firestation where we spent most of our time as children. Tree climbing was high on agenda, many huge pine trees. Backyard was small which is why the park was a big attraction. I attended YPS but left in Grade 6. Family moved to Geelong. I was the U11 & U12 'Potato Race' champ and record holder (quite an athlete!!). Unfortunately, Ive never seen the event anywhere else - so no professional career! Immediate Neighbours: Harvey & ? The yard was sticky light brown-orange clay from one end to the other, upon which we applied soil by the horse and dray load to create a garden over a number of years. This home became our castle in a town where employment, education, health, recreational facilities, church, various clubs, cultural pursuits, social stability were the norm. People came for miles around to benefit from these facilities. Few towns through towns in Gippsland could boast having so many facilities. The Yallourn Tech offered 4 tertiary Diploma courses (2 years post-Matric).

I was a passsenger in the worst car crash that had ever occurred in Yallourn. The car that I was a passenger in hit a tree at 80 mph when travelling along Strzelecki Rd. We hit a tree at the Heather Grove corner. I was in a coma for six weeks after that debacle. Drove a 1956 FJ Holden.

A lot of housework as it was a single parent family. Hated "blacking" the wood stove. We had a younger brother, John, who was fostered by Norman & Elsie Byron as our mother, Ruby James, had died in Moe in 1940, shortly after John was born. The Byrons (Broadway West) had 2 other children - Fred & Norma. Alec James later worked in forestry. This was the most settled situation our family had been in as my father had secure work (Fireman with SEC) and we had good accommodation. Immediate Neighbours: Menner on right; Robertson on left
