In the mid 70’s Mrs. Brogan in No. 2 won the prize for the best garden in Yallourn and we, in No 1, won the 3rd prize. So the entry into the street from Coach Road was very pretty.
Mr. Dell the Grade 6 teacher from the Primary school, lived in this street also.

In 1928, volunteers began work on draining the "Melbourne Swamp" to create the sporting ovals. These ovals would later be classed as among the best in the State.

In 1955, the touring MCC team played for 3 days on one of the manicured ovals and in 1956, 13,000 people turned up to see international athletes stage a "mini Olympics".

In November 1971, No 1 oval flooded enough for Don Suckling and Ross Simpson to take their boat and water-ski on it. The oval was drained in time for the next football match to be played on it.

This photograph was taken by well-known Yallourn identity Mr Cliff Cleverly at the first game of night football played at the Yallourn Oval on Wednesday, July 21st 1971.

When I was a young apprentice working down the Yallourn Open Cut, I was told the story about this photo. Apparently it was a foggy night late 60's - early 70's, when the Loco on the right stopped for a red light.
The Loco on the left came through and ploughed into the stationary Loco sending its trucks up and over the stationary Loco (Lucky Number 113).
I was told that the emergency trip stop failed on the track and the driver was very lucky not to have been killed as the Electrical Overhead lines are 10,000 volts DC.

When I was little, mum would have my sister in the pram, we would get on the bus to Yallourn, walk over to the wading pool if it was hot and then go to the bakery and mum would buy us lunch and we would sit at the park opposite the Yallourn Medical Centre under a tree. Mum would later finish her shopping and home again on the bus. To me this was heaven....Ray Lovison

Late one Saturday afternoon in about 1970, an intense storm passed over Yallourn. The ovals flooded and remained wet through the following day.

At about 5:00pm on the Saturday, the heavens suddenly opened, pouring torrential rain across Yallourn.. The ovals flooded rapidly, restricting access from the hospital back into Yallourn necessitating a diversion via Hernes Oak. The water remained over #1 oval through the Sunday, but cleared rapidly therafter

1970 - Peter is the blonde (white hair) standing in the middle. I think I recognise the Lyon's twins - Paul and Norm and Phillip Davies (Daffy) at the front. I think the guy behind the tree is Mark Hawken
