YALLOURN FIRE STATIONS
The first fire station (not a lot is known about this station) was located in the town square. Built in the 1920s, its first captain was Mr C Fenner.
Fires that occurred during this station's reign: In 1926 Yallourn was threatened when fires reached the north bank of the river, 1930 a bushfire at the BCM township was attended by Yallourn’s new yellow petrol-driven fire horse, 1932 the first house fire in Yallourn occurred on 16 January. The house in Meadow Lane was totally destroyed. 1939 Black Friday raged throughout the State causing over 70 deaths, at Yallourn 1,000 people fought desperately to save the town and works. 1944 Yallourn was one of the few towns in the path of a bushfire where not a single casualty
was suffered nor a house lost. There were nine deaths and 136 houses destroyed in the Hernes Oak, Morwell and Traralgon areas.
The station was demolished some time in the 1940s? Centre Hall was built in its place. In 1948 a new fire station opened in Terminal Place. The station included 4 fully self contained flats, three trailer pumps, six bay station housing, two units and three station vehicles, there was also a billiard
room and workshop.
The Fire Station, Monash Square, and Kernot Hall were the last Yallourn facilities to be removed as they were being used as Apprentice Training
annexe - they were demolished in early 1987.
