David Apps - approx 1960 - on the slopes of Mt Erica sitting in an ex-stock car with a 38 Ford V8 motor cobbled to a truck gearbox. It was used for a bit of sport on the forest tracks in the area. This was probably the last time it was driven as the engine had seized coming back down the track, the car had spun three times when the back wheels locked and that is a look of relief on the driver's face since, most surprisingly, the car stayed on the road. And, yes, it had no brakes hence the rocks chocking the front wheels (the stock car may have belonged unofficially to the Frank Hurley Rover Scout Group)....RF

I hear that the Frank Hurley Rover Crew was expelled from the Scout Movement for bad behavior back in the late 1950s/early 1960s so while they kept up their activities as usual it couldn't be said that they were part of the Scout movement....

It's disappointing to read the comment that the Captain Hurley Rover Crew was expelled from the Scout Movement in the 1950s/60s, as this just didn't happen. As the Rover Crew is still in existance today, it is hard to believe that there was ever any problems.
In regard to the old stock car, it was purched by the Rovers for the sole purpose of transporting building materials and other gear from Erica to our hut on the mountain. It turned out to be an excellent vehicle for what we wanted. As for your comments about our bad behavior, the local Police were aware of what we were doing, and it was with their consent that the car was used.
There was never any problems with our behavior, and any suggestion that there was, in just not true.
Perhaps you shouldn't believe everything you read or hear.
