Notes

Ernest Dann was appointed as Workshops Superintendent at Yallourn on April 1st 1921.

Ada Dann, Jean aged 10 years & Howard aged 9 years, remained in Castlemaine for about 12 months, where Jean & Howard were born. This was so a Brick house could be built for them before they moved to Yallourn (a requirement of Ada!)

Ada, Jean & Howard joined Ernest in Yallourn in 1922.

Ernest & Ada Dann took a leading role in establishing many of the facilities in Yallourn's early years. Details of Ernest's interest & involvement in community affairs can be seen in the copies of “The Live Wire” - January 8, 1947 & March 5, 1947 written at the time of Ernest's retirement. Ada's special interest was in Guiding. She was a teacher before she was married & continued an interest in young people into the Girl Guides, becoming Commissioner for Gippsland.

Ernest & Ada's children, Jean & Howard attended the new Primary school in Yallourn, Jean for 18 months & Howard for several years. Then, as there was no secondary school in Yallourn, Jean was sent to boarding school in Melbourne (“Firbank” in Brighton) in 1925 & Howard to Brighton Grammar a couple of years later. They both went on to Melbourne University & only returned to Yallourn briefly for holidays.

Howard's son Peter lived with his grandparents Ernest & Ada Dann for several years in the early 1940's & I think Peter attended primary school in Yallourn.
