Very happy. It was above street level and overlooked the town below and right across to the Srzelecki Ranges where there were fern gullies and then led down to the sea. I liked the fact that staff members and even lowly paid employees could live next to each other. This didn't always appeal to some wives (staff)! We were fortunate to be able to go to the snow in winter and the sea - but there was petrol rationing and friends shared the joy. Mr Servellie, Manager of the Briquette Works, whose wife and family were evacuated, took us for drives in the hills etc. I was sent to Yallourn from SEC Head Office in Melbourne to assist the Divisional Engineer, Bruce Banks, to arrange for the possible evacuation of women and children should Yallourn be bombed by the Japanese. Because of petrol rationing, some people had attached to the back of their car something to contain eucalpyt leaves to burn as energy.
