A lot of housework as it was a single parent family. Hated "blacking" the wood stove. We had a younger brother, John, who was fostered by Norman & Elsie Byron as our mother, Ruby James, had died in Moe in 1940, shortly after John was born. The Byrons (Broadway West) had 2 other children - Fred & Norma. Alec James later worked in forestry. This was the most settled situation our family had been in as my father had secure work (Fireman with SEC) and we had good accommodation.
