The Yallourn Library was opened to the public on 14 October 1946 in a temporary building, the Casualty Clearing Station located on the site of Kernot Hall.

The new library building on the opposite side of the Yallourn Town Square was officially opened on 16 November 1956. It housed a general library area and other features, including an activity room housing a projector recess, kitchen, store and a gallery.
