After the death of Jim Garvin, Nell and Beryl moved to 47 Parkside in 1964, a two-bedroom house opposite the ovals. Beryl attended Burwood Teachers’ College and taught in various primary schools in Victoria.
7th January 1966, Beryl married Brett Wadley in Yallourn Presbyterian Church. In 1972, Nell moved to a unit in Mt View Road, Frankston.
We all enjoyed our upbringing in Yallourn, a friendly town of 5,000 people. The town was designed by Walter Burley Griffin (also designed Canberra). We were lucky to have all the following activities available: Athletics, Australian Rules, Badminton, Ballet, Basketball, Bike Racing, Brass Band, Brownies, Cricket, Croquet, Cubs, Guides, Golf, Gun Club, Lawn Bowls, Rifle Range, Scouts, Small Bore Range, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Tap Dancing, Theatre Group, etc.
We joined the Brownies and Cubs, enjoyed swimming in the pool and in the Latrobe River at “Sandbank” where the water was warm after being used to cool the power stations A and B. After the war, we had Sunday outings in the car and various camping and caravan holidays. Picking mushrooms and blackberries locally. Beryl played netball; Bob play schoolboy soccer, rifle shooting and small bore shooting.
Dr Jim Andrew made house visits in his new black 1946 Ford V8, the envy of all in the town.
Minor irritations arose in the town when the wind blew from certain directions, the unpleasant smell from the Maryvale paper works and the coal dust which affected our eyes and covered the washing as it was drying on the clothes line.
From 1975 to 1980, over 600 houses had been removed from Yallourn and relocated in surrounding areas. By December 1976, most business houses in Yallourn had closed. The population of the town had fallen to 1,825 (in 1954, it was 5,580).
