A happy life here. Although I moved out in 1948, my parents lived here till approx 1960. Dad had a good vege garden and champion flowers (Dahlias). Spent great times with Beryl Cameron and we are still great friends after 82 years! Playing football over the garage with the Lobley boys...Lawrie Baker from over the road taught me how to ride a 2-wheel bike at 5 years old. All the kids around used to walk to Primary School together after it opened in 1930.
I was born in Yallourn in 1925 so grew up in a very friendly, happy town as everyone had employment. My parents had one of the first houses in Hillside but when number three child arrived, the house was too small so we had to move to a larger house at 40 Latrobe Avenue with Myrtle 5½, myself 3½ and Ted 1½ (all born in May), which then began my years with Yallourn.
I began dancing with the Green Ladies at 4 years old, Irish and national, then to Mrs Huddy with concerts and competitions another change to Miss Joy (Smith). During these years, we had great fun at the A&A Sports held at the oval with wood chops (see the great chips flying), bike races, all sorts of races for kids – egg & spoon, 3 leg race, sack races and foot races for young and old. Stalls were selling things, especially sweets, ice creams etc.
I married Max Fox in 1948 and as no houses were available, we built at Newborough but still kept close to Yallourn until it ceased to be.
