Our Holden bought new, became 1959 "Yallourn Taxi Truck" pkcking up goods from the train and mum delivered them!

I think this team was a means of getting a trip and overnight billeted stay to compete against Nunawading High School. Coincidentally this school has also been demolished.

Anker Lerche worked as a boiler house engineer, first at the old Yallourn Power station (from 1959) and then later at Morwell power station until he retired (1977, I think). This was how the house looked when we first arrived from Melbourne. It was a bit of a shock for mum and dad, so we stayed with friends (Stella and Aage Nielsen, and their daughter Maureen, who had arrived in Yallourn some years earlier) until the house was fixed up a bit. The floorboards were bare, so carpet and lino had to be laid down.

My mother, Elna Lerche, tackling the weeds not long after we first moved in. That's the Fairfield Avenue guesthouse on the left in the background. We ended up having such a beautiful garden, and mum remained a keen gardener all her life. Both my sister and I have inherited the interest, and were allowed to have our own patch of garden from when we were very small.

Mum and Dad were always keen to explore the area, so we began with the nearest hills, those where Yallourn North was built.

Photo taken from the garden of our house at No.1 Westbrook Rd soon after we first moved in. The guesthouse is on the left and the house where the Gregory family lived is on the corner opposite. We soon became friends with them.

YALLOURN DRAW WITH SALE
Last Sunday, in muddy conditions, Yallourn were opposed to Sale, at Sale.
Inspired by last week’s win over St. Patrick’s College, Yallourn played exceptionally well, and drew 1-1,
with the strong Sale combination.
At the commencement of the game, Sale were hard into attack, and scored a quick goal. With the pressure on right through the first term, Yallourn held off many attacks, and due to the splendid back-work, particularly by the goalie, P.Griffiths, Sale could not force any more goals.

R.A.A.F. DOWN YALLOURN
In splendid weather conditions last Sunday, Yallourn were hosts to the R.A.A.F. side. The visitors, now on top of the ladder, proved too strong a combination and defeated Yallourn 4 – 1
At the commencement of the first half, the R.A.A.F. quickly goaled, showing they were to be a side to be reckoned with. Shortly afterwards, McArthur goaled splendidly for Yallourn and levelled the scores. The
R.A.A/F forwards combined well . and managed to force a second goal.
