Bricks used in the town's construction were all made on site at Yallourn's own brickworks.
W H (Dad) Brewer's family came to Yallourn to set up the brickworks for the SEC and then managed it until it was no longer of use to the commission. 'Dad' Brewer then leased it until he died in the late 1940's. During the time he managed the brickworks for the SEC, the bricks all had 'Yallourn' stamped into the 'frog', when he leased the brickworks and ran it as a family business, the family name 'Brewer' replaced Yallourn on the bricks.

I remember when I was in
I remember when I was in Primary School that a Mr Knight from Banksia Street (apparently 2 doors down from Bruce and Tom Knights place) ran the Brick Works. This would have been in the mid 50's - the Knight's sons were named Russell and Perry. I have seen lots of Yallourn Brick, in fact have a lot in my home / garden in Churchill - all marked Yallourn, unfortunately I have never seen one marked Brewer. The Bricks I have came from the part of town that was constructed early on. I would imagine the "Brewer" Bricks would have been in the later areas of Construction. Nice to know that they exist though.
OMG Kevvy you have Yallourn
OMG Kevvy you have Yallourn bricks!!!!! How lucky are you!!!!!
Kevin, you are right about
Kevin, you are right about the Knight families. Matt Knight and family lived in 55 Banksia street, he was later replaced at the brick works by Bob Phillips who also moved into 55 Banksia street. 53 Banksia street was my Grandmothers house ( Annie Boag ) and 51 was Bruce and Tom Knights house. Bruce had 2 daughters I think one was named Yvonne.
Hi Frank, thanks for that.
Hi Frank, thanks for that. I didnt know the father ( Matt), but I had been there a couple of times during Primary School. Bruce Knight's other daughter is Rosalyn. Rosalyn was the older one. I think Yvonne moved up Bendigo way, but I believe that Rosalyn is still living locally ( ie in the Latrobe Valley area).
