Joe (Joseph George) Manicola (born 1946) was one of a number of young men from Yallourn and district who were conscripted to undertake National Service during the years of the Vietnam War.

The Manicola family lived at Yallourn North. Joe and his elder brother attended the Yallourn Technical School. Joe was an affable and an extremely popular student at YTS.

Geoff Taber - Yallourn Football Club YFC

The Latrobe Valley Express (16 October 2014) recently carried the news regarding the passing of former Yallourn footballer Geoff Taber. Geoff played at Yallourn FC after the war and is one of twenty-eight players' names that are listed on the 1948 ‘souvenir’ premiership flag. It is believed that Geoff was a ruck man for Yallourn in those days.

Geoff was later cleared to Moe Football Club where he gave long and loyal service as a committee member.

Yallourn General Superintendents

General Superintendents - Yallourn:
1923 – 1934 – J M Bridge – first General Superintendent while still in charge of coal production. CH Kernot acted in that role between Jan 1925 and Jan 1927 (and again in 1933) in the absence abroad of J M Bridge.
1934 – 1938 – R D Dixon
1938 – 1949 – R A Hunt (later SECV Chairman)
1949 – 1950 – W Morrison
1951 – 1963 – Brig John Field (In 1963, management moved from Yallourn to Morwell and Brig Field became the last General Superintendent and the first Manager of the Latrobe Valley Region)

George Looby - Yallourn Football Club YFC

DEATH OF GEORGE LOOBY
1922-2014

Former Yallourn footballer George Looby passed away on 27th August 2014. George was a skillful defender for Yallourn FC and was listed as one of the Blues’ best players in the club’s historic win over Morwell in the 1948 Grand Final at Trafalgar. George then went on to play in the premiership team at Traralgon and then played with Hazelwood FC.

In the photograph of the 1948 premiership team, George can be seen sitting next to Jimmy Shaw in the front row.

The Honour Boards from Yallourn High School are now situated at the Brown Coal Mine Museum in Yallourn North.

Hugh (Hughie) Graham - The Early Years - Swimming

The early years – Hughie Graham

Hughie Graham first became involved in Life saving at the age of 14 years at the Edithvale Club. Over the next few years he gained Elementary, Proficiency, Bronze Medal, Surf Medal, Award of Merit and finally his Teacher and Instructor Certificates.

He worked with the Edithvale Club until 1929 when he moved to Yallourn to work, due to the lack of work around Edithvale during the Depression.

He helped form a swimming club on the Latrobe River and in 1930/31 was asked to form a Life saving class as instructor. The floods of 1934 washed… more

Railway Avenue

Railway Avenue
The Ambulance Station was built in the treed park on the corner of Railway Avenue & Southway, as before this was built Jeff Long used to keep the ambulance at his place (30 Railway Avenue) and Val Hall was the other Ambulance Driver who lived over the back from Longs at 21 Southway.

The “Live Wire” local newspaper office was situated at 55 Railway Avenue – I remember going there with my mum. It was closed after the Latrobe Valley Express opened offices in Morwell and took over as the local newspaper. I still remember seeing the printing room through the… more

Doug Williams Yallourn Football Club YFC Past Player

Some sad news for people of Yallourn…..Doug Williams passed away on Monday, 18 August 2014 at the age of 93.
Doug played with Yallourn FC…then Carlton and…. then coached in Tasmania and then played with Morwell FC before retiring from football.
Carlton FC have a tribute planned and will be wearing black arm bands against Port Adelaide in memory/honour of Doug.
