Does anyone remember the couple who ran a business around the corner from Dolphins book shop. I think it was a male and female hairdressers, come tobacconist. There was a chess board (I think) in the front of the shop window. I don’t remember the man, but the woman was blonde with a hairdo like Dorothy Dors (English actress). She wore tight A-line skirts, and clinging tops???

Also Rev. Kirby used to live in the Vicarage in the early 60’s. He and his family moved to Geelong parish. They had a disabled son. Karl and I were sitting in a restaurant in Yarraville some years back and a young woman and her friends sat near us. The young woman began talking about Yallourn. She was Rev. Kirby’s daughter.

Also there was another Rev., he married Karl and I, in the early 70’s.

When I think about things, it is my time at Yallourn High School, which has shaped me into the person I am. Teachers who had an influence were Miss Mary Bennett (Newton), Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Smith (typing). A teacher, I remember at the sports oval, a hot day, she removed her bra, without taking off her shirt/blouse. I also can do the same. I was frightened of Mr. McAdam.

Premesis - Barber / tobacconist / hairdresser. Mr. Elterman was the hairdresser
Rev. Kirby and his wife Gertrude had a 4 children. Michael and Bernard both passed away at an early age. It may have been Margaret to whom you refer.
Rev. Leaver, Rev. Singleton or maybe the "retired" locum Rev. Senior

Daughters name was Katherine Kirby - used to attend Sunday School with her and Bernard. You are right it was Eltermans who had the hairdressing business - they lived in Moe - their daughter was a couple of years ahead of me at Moe High, I will never forget the school swimming sports where she wore a leopard print bikini - what a knockout - also had blonde hair.

Thanks for all the above information. The English actress is not Dorothy Dors, but Dianna Dors. The young woman Karl and I saw, who is Rev. Kirby's daughter has long black hair. The leopard print bikini does not surprise. How fashionable were we all, well some, and so smartly dressed. Just look at the school photo's. Re reading some of my comments, I must check before sending. Late into the night is not the time for clear thinking.

The hairdresser was Wally Lacy. The reason the chess set was in the window was because Wally was a very fine competition chess player. He also had a very old cabinet style radio in the shop. It was painted in very bright colours ( I think by one of the Apprentices - Steve Mayes {still working as a hairdresser in Shaw's Arcade in Moe} and Ross Hender did their Apprenticeships Wally). The Lacy family lived in Boola Crescent (my home street) and Wally used to talk to me about the number of kids in the street ( there was 27 kids -the street had 13 houses. Wally's first hairdressing business was upstairs (across the Road from Rockmans - near Byrnes delicatessen) - from the hairdressers you used to be able to look down on Centre Way. I the earlier days there were two Men's hairdressers ( Clem Mitchell andWally Lacy) - from memory Wally used to smoke a pipe. I am reasonably sure that Diana Dors was Joyce Botten (George Botten's Wife). Typing isa mess but in a hurry sorry.

Sorry Helen, I remember Ross cutting my hair, I originally used to have it done at Clem Mitchells, then later went to Wally L's. I knew Ross was a hairdresser, but got confused with the old age lol

Actually there was another men's hairdresser in the early 50's called O'Shannessy, his barber shop was in Broadway, upstairs to the Broadway Beauty Beauty Salon, run by Joan Watson.

The Hairdressers (with the Chess Board) was Wally Lacy's. I used to go to the hairdressers upstairs in Broadway (on occasions). I always remembered it as Wally Lacy's also, however, it may have been O'Shannessy's - but Wally Lacy worked there. When the "new shops" were built (heading down towards the Police Station {Dolphins, Cooks, Olivers etc}), Wally Lacy moved into his hairdressers in these shops. I don't recollect the "upstairs" hairdressers remaining open. It is possible that Wally was an employee upstairs, and ventured out on his own into one of the "new shops" - I guess I was only 6 or 7 when I used to go upstairs. Olivers and Cooks (prior to moving to the new shops) where in little 'hut' style shops located between the Office Place Guest House and where the new Library was built

Yes Kevin can remember them "Hut" shops Britters ladies wear had a shop there as well .They moved to a new shop between the Post Office And Colindales Café/coffee Shop over the road from Mitchells Hairdressers .
